What is Tajweed?

In the context of the recitation of the Quran, tajwid (in Arabic: تَجْوِيدْ‎) is a set of rules for the correct pronunciation of the Quranic letters with all their qualities and applying the various traditional methods of recitation (Qira’at).

In Arabic, the term tajweed is derived from the triliteral root ج-و-د j-w-d, meaning enhancement or to make something excellent. Technically, it means giving every letter its right in reciting the Qur’an.

Tajweed Quran covers the guidelines on how Arabic alphabets should be pronounced, places to pause, stop, or keep going during Quran recitation, when to elongate the pronunciation of an alphabet, etc. It covers the characteristics of Arabic alphabets and how they interact with each other such that they can take different forms.
